Storage Tips

Stacking and Packing

Canway provides a variety of moving and packing supplies to assist you in the safe and efficient packing of your household goods and storage unit.  The following tips and recommendations will assist you with your moving and storage experience.

  • Keep in mind those items most frequently needed should be nearest the door. A small walk-way will provide easy access to your goods.

  • Utilize uniform size boxes for easy stacking.

  • Keep a list of your stored items and retain in a safe place at your home or in a safe deposit box.

  • Dishes, glass items, and other breakables should be individually wrapped in packing paper with padding on top and bottom of the box.   Plates, saucers and platters should be placed on their sides.

  • Bedding, clothing, curtains, and drapes should be folded in dresser drawers or stored on hangers in wardrobe boxes.  The bottom portion of wardrobe boxes can be utilized to store other items.

  • Books, documents, and record albums should always be packed in small boxes (for ease in handling).  Do not pack fragile items in the same box with these items.

  • Furniture should be disassembled.   Stack nightstands on dressers and stand sofas on end.  Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for knickknacks, china, silverware and small items.  Coat your wood furniture with plenty of polish.

  • Lamps, picture frames, mirrors, and lamp shades should be packed separately for their protection.  Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in bubble-wrap or blankets, covered with cardboard, marked "fragile" and stacked on end.

  • Mattresses should be stored upright to utilize space more efficiently.

  • Appliances such as refrigerators and freezers should be defrosted and the doors should remain slightly open.  Cooking equipment should be cleaned of all food particles.   Larger appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels, clothing, etc.

  • Bikes and tools should be thoroughly cleaned and wiped with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil to retard dust.   Long-handled tools (rakes, shovels, hoes) should be cleaned, lightly oiled and tied in bundles.

  • Label or number all cartons, especially ones with glass or liquids "This End Up" or "Fragile".   Protect your furniture with pads, covers or blankets.   It is recommended that plastic should not be utilized as a furniture covering.
Please remember, you cannot store any combustibles or flammable items, hazardous materials or toxic waste, gasoline, turpentine or propane, or food products.  For more information on non-allowables click here.
