What to ask Moving companies
The moving industry is gigantic and competition is intense! There are so many companies to choose from, so which one should you pick?
Ask the following questions to make sure your moving company’s policies, procedures & standards will protect you from an unpleasant moving experience…
INSURANCE
Ask if they have an insurance policy with an insurance company, or are they “self-insured”?
Out of roughly 655 greater Toronto area moving companies, only about 60% carry genuine moving insurance (which is not cheap). All the others are self-insured, even though their advertising might suggest they’re “insured for your protection.”
Ask if your valuables are covered on a “per pound basis,” or for full replacement value?
If the company is self-insured, it usually means they’ll only cover your valuables based on their weight.
For example: $1,000, antique radio (small) is accidentally dropped, you won’t get $1,000 for it. You will only get between $0.30 or $0.60 cents per pound. So, what exactly does that mean? It means if the antique radio only weighs lets say 20 pounds, you’ll only get between $6.00 and $12.00 for it.
BONDING
Ask if they’re bonded.
If they are, it should be stated on their “Certificate of Insurance”. Over 78% of all moving companies operating in Ontario are not bonded. Do not accept any excuse given for why they aren’t… you won’t be protected!
REFERENCES
Ask if they can provide you with 4 to 5 fresh referrals, ideally customers they’ve just moved a few days ago. Be sure to call them.
EXTRA FEES
Ask if they have any hidden fees?
A special fee for moving your big screen TV, or any appliance you may have. And what about the famous “fuel charge” and/or “per km charge”?
EXTRA SERVICES
Ask if they offer free Storage.
Some companies will give you one month free storage. If they do, ask them if their facility is climate-controlled. If yes, ask where it’s located and what type it is. Many companies don’t offer these services. Also, don’t forget to ask about their pest control. The last thing you want is to have any unwanted friends with your belongings.
Ask if they offer disassembly and reassembly of your furniture. Is it included, or extra?
Ask if blankets, dollies, tape and shrink wrap are all included in their price.
Ask if they have a “stair charge”? Some companies will charge you anywhere between $2 to $4 per stair.
Ask how experienced their movers are? No one likes to see on their moving day any new guys being trained.
Ask if they subcontract any of their jobs to other moving companies? Believe it or not, there are actually companies with no Trucks at all. They simply work with several other companies and sub-contract all their jobs.
